We have 2 songs that we will be singing on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and then 2 different songs for the Tuesday/Thursday class.

Long, Long Ago

Long, long ago, when the earth was young.

Dinosaurs lived here under the sun.

Some were big and some were small.

Some were fat and some were tall.

Some could swim, some could fly.

Some could stretch up, very high.

Don’t you wish, they still roamed free

And lived somewhere that you could see?

Five Hungry Dinosaurs

Five hungry dinosaurs wading through a swamp.

The first one said, “I like to stomp.”

The second one said, “My stomach is growling.”

The third one said, “It’s time to go prowling.”

The fourth one said, “Let’s look for some food.”

The fifth one said, “I’m in the mood.”

Roar! Dinosaurs!

Dinosaurs are the theme for the week! We will be doing so many dinosaur activities this week! We will of course be doing many art projects centered around dinosaurs J In addition to that, we will be digging for “fossils” in chunks of frozen ice, performing a volcano experiment, singing songs, reading books, exploring some math and literacy activities centered around dinosaurs, and even doing some dinosaur cooking projects! I will also post the rest of the books that we will be reading this week tomorrow evening.

Ahoy, Me Hearties!

(I found a website of pirate phrases, and that means “Hello, my friends!”….in case you were wonderingJ)

The last few days of pirate activity have been loads of fun! Yesterday we made a pirate ship collage, enjoyed pirate stories, sang 5 Big pirates & Going on a Treasure Hunt. The students were also really into pretending to be pirates! It is so amazing and entertaining to see them dressed up and fully engaged in being pirates!

Our snack time is starting to get pretty fancy around here. On Tuesday, Ms. Salouma made the most delicious smoothies! They were made of frozen mango, frozen pineapple, banana, and carrot juice with tropical fruit. Delish! All of the students tried a little of the smoothie…even if they thought they wouldn’t like it J Today for snack, we had little apple slice pirate ships with string cheese as the sail. Not only were they super cute, but it’s also a yummy snack combo!

We did a lot of constructing and building today. We all made catapults that actually work! However…we ran out of hot glue gun glue, so those will be going home tomorrow/next week. Once they are all completed, we plan on having a contest to see who can fling their marshmallow from their catapult the farthest. We also performed an experiment today! On Monday, Ms. Salouma asked what pirate ships were built from, and one boy responded “from rocks!” So, we built a small raft out of rocks (well actually we glued rocks to a piece of foam paper), and one out of sticks, to see which would float. First we weighed each raft to see which one weighed more. Then we took the rafts to the water table and placed each in the water to observe what would happen. We found that the rock raft sank and the wood raft stayed afloat! Who said learning wasn’t fun???

The Beginning of our Pirate Adventures….

We started our pirate week today! The students made the cutest pirate parrot to sit on their shoulders for the art project today.

We also read Dirty Joe, the Pirate by Bill Harley during story time. This book was so funny! It was about two pirates, a brother and a sister, and one steals socks from people while the other steals underwear. Too cute! Definitely a book to check out at the library for a good laughJ Ms. Salouma came up with the lyrics to 5 Big Pirates, the song that we sang today. She is so good at coming up with songs on the spot that relate to our theme! I will post the lyrics for this below so that you can sing it along with your student this week!

5 Big Pirates (to the tune of “5 Little Ducks”)

5 big pirates went sailing one day

Over the seas and far away

The thunder outside went crack, crack, crack

And 4 big pirates came sailing back

Repeat using 4 pirates, all the way down to 1!

Ahoy mateys! We will be focusing on pirates and the jungle this week. We will be doing many pirate and jungle activities….constructing catapults and ships, singing pirate songs, reading pirate and jungle books, creating pirate and jungle art projects, pirate themed math and literacy activities, and trying some new tropical snack foods! This week should be filled with lots of pirate fun!
